Love Victor Season 2: Is this the ‘coming out’ of a perfect queer series?

The second season of Love Victor is here, and if we were excited about the first season, we are beyond ecstatic to see what the new one has to offer. The first season which had the fans reeling with its perfect acting and on point plotline, ended on a cliffhanger. A cliffhanger that stops just at the most critical revelation point. The ending had the fans biting down on their nails (and frankly, some were cursing on the almost revelation. No one can be blamed).

Season 1 was filled with so much hope and expectations that it delivered very well. Every character was very well written with individual personalities with stark differences that made it even more fun to watch. The characters that came from so many backgrounds interacted in the best way possible with obvious clashes but nothing that does not end without a promise of redemption. Jealousy, humour tinged with real-life problems that the LGBTQIA+ people face in their traditionalist backgrounds, were penned down so beautifully that no one could stop their tears, whether from laughter or sadness.

The series follows the story of a freshly shifted to a new place and school, Victor Salazar, as he tries to navigate his life as a student of Creekwood High School and desperately try to understand his attraction to his fellow student and worker Benji. Victor is yet to realise his sexuality and tries to date and breaks hearts along the way. But the end has him finally realising who he is supposed to be with season 1 ending with the realisation, season 2 sets to him exploring his newly discovered orientation and relationship.

With such a good season 1, season 2 has many hopefuls who are in wait to see what new the series can give them (and different from the typical cliché queer movies).

First, let us get acquainted with all the gorgeous actors who brought these characters to life.

Cast

  • Michael Cimino as Victor Salazar
  • George Sear as Benji Campbell
  • Rachel Hilson as Mia Brooks
  • Anthony Turpel as Felix Western
  • Bebe Wood as Lake Meriwether
  • Mason Gooding as Andrew
  • Isabella Ferreira as Pilar Salazar
  • Mateo Fernandez as Adrian Salazar
  • James Martinez as Armando Salazar
  • Ana Ortiz as Isabel Salazar
  • The series also featured our favourite Nick Robinson as a recurring character Simon Spier from the movie Love, Simon.

Where does the story come from?

The last character introduction either probably smiling in nostalgia- the ferry scenes and high school drama with atypical, good for nothing bullies- or you tilted your head in confusion (which ok what). Love, Simon was the original story taken from the book Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda written by our beloved Becky Albertalli.

This movie follows the story of high school student Simon Spier, who realises that he is gay but is afraid to come out to his friends and family for fear of rejection and abandonment. A chance Tumblr post in the school group has him chatting to the anonymous poster.

He is unabashedly authentic with the stranger and reveals his sexual orientation. But the exchanged emails are discovered by a fellow schoolmate who blackmails him into hooking him up with Simon’s friend. What follows is a story of how Simon navigates the blackmails while still maintaining contact with the poster.

How is Love, Victor, different from Love, Simon?

Love, Victor is a spin-off of the original movie that begins in the same high school as Simon, but fans quickly point the apparent differences in the exact settings the plot is set up in. The background that the characters come from.

Love, Simon is described as an idealistic story where everyone was quick to accept him. Coming from a liberal household, he didn’t face rejection from his family. Whereas Love, Victor is a realistic story where we see a complete picture. The main character comes from a traditionalist Latino household that follows conservative ideologies. As a result, acceptance comes hard, and he faces a lot of difficulties. On the one hand, Simon had already discovered his identity and was comfortable identifying as gay; Victor is still learning where he stands with his sexual identity.

What is about this series that makes it unique?

What attracted me to this series was how it navigates the life of a regular student. No celebrity. No public figure. Or even a student who is special because of their status or wealth. Just a simple school student who goes through his everyday life of homework and sports while struggling with his sexuality. It has tried to narrate a story that every queer teenage student goes through. The series has nothing pretentious about it that allows teenagers to relate to it more and more. It explores the notion of having doubts about sexuality very beautifully.

It allows the character to grow at a natural pace without much intervention from the side characters. Though we do find characters trying to help him explore, and rather than pushing him towards a certain idea, the series has him explore everything on his own, just getting subtle hints on the way that allows him to make his own decisions.

What makes it even better is that it explores the area of homophobia. Although it is not too graphic, that could trigger someone. Instead, it is evident in the way the people concerned with it acts. But the show also gives them a space to grow. And that is something that we are looking forward to in the second season. The series’ season 1 ended up with a much-needed change in the couple’s relationship status, Victor and Benji. They went from ‘It’s complicated’ to ‘In a relationship’ and hoped that Victor’s girlfriend wouldn’t notice (we are looking at you, the prom scene).

The Season 2 and the heart eyes we have

The much anticipated season 2 is now just a few days away from release, and we have our breath caught, just counting each inhales down to the eventual ‘coming out.’ The newly launched trailer features the Salazar family sitting on a couch with Victor blurting out his big secret. It immediately cuts all the happy couple living their best and imagining their lives as soon as school starting after the summer break.

Although the trailer did take us by surprise, while we were expecting a typical Latino dad disagreeing with his life choices, we witnessedVictor’s mother being the unsupportive one, questioning why her son ‘turned out this way,’ all her doubts stemming from her religious beliefs. In contrast, his father tries his hardest to support his son. Their relationship also goes through significant changes that allow it to be more relevant to the main story.

This season has also given a much more critical role to Victor’s sister and brother, Pilar and Ortiz. The other couples would be given more screen time, and their relationships too would go through their ups and downs. New characters to spice up the ensemble and love triangles would make season 2 more interesting to watch.

Where to watch?

The season would be available exclusively on Hulu from June 11.
