Apple Launches Foldable iPhone Duo in Major 2026 Update

After years of staying out of the foldable-phone race, Apple has finally introduced a device that changes the shape of its iPhone lineup.

The company unveiled the iPhone Duo at its September 9 event, giving customers a smartphone that folds into a compact form and opens into a much larger screen. The launch also marked the first major iPhone event led by Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus.

From a Pocket Phone to a Larger Screen

The biggest difference with the iPhone Duo is its two-screen design.

When closed, the phone uses a 5.4-inch outer display. Opening it reveals a 7.6-inch internal screen, creating considerably more room for apps, entertainment and multitasking.

Apple says the inner display uses a special nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare. The company has also built the phone around a precision hinge intended to provide a smooth folding experience.

Apple’s First Foldable Arrives

Apple’s entry comes after foldable smartphones have already become an established category among competing manufacturers.

For years, Samsung and other Android phone makers have experimented with folding displays, different hinge designs and software that takes advantage of larger screens.

Apple has taken longer to enter the market. Its approach with the foldable iPhone is centered on combining the larger display with the hardware, software and ecosystem that iPhone users already know.

The company is also emphasizing durability as part of the design.

A20 Pro Powers the New Device

Inside the iPhone Duo is Apple’s A20 Pro chip, which the company developed for its latest generation of high-end devices.

The phone also uses a custom vapor chamber for thermal management and a dual-battery architecture. Apple says these components help the device deliver high performance while maintaining all-day battery life.

That combination is particularly important for a foldable device because its thin design leaves less internal space for traditional components.

John Ternus Takes the Stage

The September event was also significant because it introduced Apple’s new leadership era.

Ternus became CEO on September 1, succeeding Tim Cook. Before becoming CEO, he spent years leading Apple’s hardware engineering organization and played a role in the development of many of the company’s major products.

His first major event as CEO therefore came with one of Apple’s most important new hardware categories.

The Pro Models Join the Lineup

Apple also updated its premium smartphone range with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The company’s release strategy is changing, however. Rather than releasing the entire iPhone 18 family together in September, Apple is expected to introduce its standard model at a later point.

That approach puts additional attention on the premium iPhones and the new foldable model during Apple’s major fall event.

Apple Moves Into a New Smartphone Category

The launch of the foldable iPhone gives Apple a new opportunity to expand the traditional iPhone experience.

A larger screen that folds into a smaller device could appeal to people who want tablet-like space without carrying a separate tablet. At the same time, the design introduces new questions about durability, software and how customers will use the device over time.

Apple’s first move into foldable phones will therefore be closely watched as the company develops this new part of its smartphone lineup.
